Happy Thursday! This note contains important information and upcoming events. Thanks for reading each week!

Thursday/Friday Note from
The Mastery School of Hawken

February 5, 2021

Monday was no ordinary Monday. In fact, it was an historic day (at least in the life of the Mastery School…) Why? It marked the start of the first ever second semester with new Macros (including “Talking to Strangers” pictured below in Ohio City) and a new program element “Micro Flexes,” (Including “Painting Studio” pictured above).

Not bad for the first week in February.

In this edition of the Thursday Note:
  1. About those New Macros
  2. And about the new Micro Flex options
  3. Remote Wednesdays
  4. College News for Sophomores
  5. News from around Hawken
  6. Highlight of the Week

About those New Macros

Talking to Strangers and Movement and Belonging, this spring’s Human Foundations Macros, launched this week! Students in Talking to Strangers got their first challenge of the semester on Tuesday from architect Nia Marinucci of the Marinucci Group. Movement and Belonging students will get their first challenge today – can you handle the suspense?

And About the Micro Flex Options

On our website, we describe Micros as “Individualized. Intentional. In sync with you and your growth.” As we build out the Micro program, we’re keeping this promise top of mind.

It was in that spirit that we launched Micro Flex block this week. This block allows students to further personalize the micros experience by getting more of what they want and what they need.
Each Thursday, we’ll have two 55-minute Flex blocks. Depending on their wants and needs, students might use the time for any of the following:
  • Creating Music through Music Theory with guest artist David McHenry
  • Painting Studio
  • Revolution Prep: Standardized Test Prep for 10th Graders
  • Extra time in their current Mathematical Thinking micro
  • Extra time in their current Language Learning micro
This week, students had the chance to test out Creating Music and Painting Studio and then decide whether to commit to them for the next six weeks.  After that, students will have a chance to keep going or try their hands at another one with the guidance of their Wayfinding Mentor. In their remaining Micro Flex time, students will sign up on a weekly basis for Extra Mathematical Thinking and Language Learning based on where they most want and need to spend their time that week. Revolution Prep test prep starts next week for sophomores. It was exciting to see students intently at work around campus!

Weekly Reminder about Remote Wednesdays

If your child will be on campus this coming Wednesday, it is crucial that we know in advance in order to have an accurate headcount. Please either complete this survey or communicate directly with Mindy. Students may also tell Mindy their plans themselves. If you know your plans all the way to spring break, please let us know!

Highlight of the Week

Each week, we find one glittering jewel to share among the pile of glittering jewels. This week’s highlight: Yesterday, the students in the Talking to Strangers Macro visited Ohio City and met their challenge partner @thearchitetta. The students are developing renovation design solutions for historic homes in Ohio City. It’s another example of real world problem solving for real people.
