Thursday Note from
The Mastery School of Hawken

November 5, 2020
We’re very lucky to have our school psychologist Dr. Poklar. This fall, she’s helping students and faculty alike feel centered, ready, and calm by offering mindfulness challenges. This week’s: Identify 2-3 things that make you feel recharged, refreshed, and/or renewed. It’s helpful. If you’re having a particularly charged week, you should give it a try!

In this edition of the Thursday Note:
  1. Learn More about the Re-Enrollment Process
  2. Next Week: Family Conferences
  3. New Visual Arts Offering
  4. Remote Wednesday Signup
  5. Tomorrow: Picture Retakes
  6. Read and Share
  7. All School Reminders
  8. Highlight of the Week

Learn More about the Re-Enrollment Process

We recognize that most of our founding families are new to Hawken and our re-enrollment process. Please join us Monday, November 16th at 6:30 p.m. for the “Mastery School Re-enrollment Process” meeting hosted by Kathy Mitchell O’Neal, Assistant Head of School for Enrollment Management, and Brad Large, Associate Director of Enrollment Management and Director of Flexible Tuition. We will send out more information including a Zoom link as the meeting approaches.

In addition, please remember the flexible tuition application deadline for current Hawken families is Friday, November 13th.  Please contact Brad Large at with any questions about flexible tuition.

Family Conferences

Family conferences will be held next Monday, November 9; Tuesday, November 10; and Wednesday, November 11. We’ll send Zoom links beforehand.

These student-led conferences are a great opportunity for students, with the support of the Wayfinding mentor and the Director or Dean of Students, to catch families up on their growth and progress this semester.

New Visual Arts Offering

Good news! This week we began offering a micro in 2D Visual Art taught by Adrian Eisenhower, local artist and founder of the Walton Avenue Atelier. In the first week, students got a live virtual tour of the Walton Avenue Atelier studio space, shared some of their work, and helped co-create a plan to focus on anatomy and figure drawing in the next six weeks.

It’s not too late to join! Contact Dan O’Connor ( for more details.  Sessions are held on Wednesdays from 2:30-4:00 pm – remaining meeting times are listed below
  • 11/11: On campus with remote option
  • 11/18: On campus with remote option
  • 12/2: Remote
  • 12/9: Remote
  • 12/16: Remote

Remote Wednesday Signup

Joining our new art class in person? Hey, then you’ll be on campus next Wednesday! Help us ensure students have the food and transportation they need by filling out this survey or communicating directly to Mindy by the end of Monday.

Picture Retakes

If you missed picture day — or if you want another shot at it — the photographer will be on campus on tomorrow, Friday, November 6.  Here’s the order form.

Read and Share

Over the last year or so, many of our Mastery School faculty wrote posts that appeared on the ReDesigning School website. We thought it might be a good idea to share one of these contributions in the next few Thursday notes and to encourage you, if you’re so moved, to share them on your social media feeds or as emails to friends. It’s one small way to get the word out about the Mastery School.

First up: To Be a Neighbor by Dean of Students, Ambrose Faturoti.

Highlight of the Week

Each week, we’ll find one glittering jewel to share among the pile of glittering jewels. This week’s highlight: We know it  officially happened last week, but the Halloween and Harvest Day was such a great day that we wanted to make sure you saw all about it. Take a look!
