Thursday Note from
The Mastery School of Hawken

January 28, 2021

While it was a short week, it was a rich one! The first Mastery School Intensives resulted in so many fabulous projects including this trailer for “Primary Factions” from Mr. O’Connor’s Science Fiction course. We’re constantly reminded of — and amazed by — the optimism, resilience, and creativity of our Founding Class.

In this edition of the Thursday Note:
  1. Spring Semester Schedule
  2. Remote Wednesdays
  3. Thanks for the Parent Gathering
  4. Good News about Lunch
  5. We Could Use Your Help!
  6. College News for Sophomores
  7. Early Acceptances for Hawken’s Class of 2021
  8. News from around Hawken
  9. Highlight of the Week

And We’re Back!

We are back to our usual schedule next week! Temperature checks are available in Academic Building 3 beginning at 8:00 AM. The day begins at 8:30 AM.

And So Are Remote Wednesdays!

After reviewing the situation, we have determined that remote instruction Wednesdays will continue between now and spring break. While we continue to reassess at each interval, as of now our underlying conditions have not changed; we still have remote students and teachers, and extensive distancing and masking protocols in place on campus.

For equity reasons, we still see significant benefit to one day of remote teaching and learning each week. We appreciate the complexities of this situation and thank you for your flexibility and partnership.

As was the case in the fall, the campus is open on Wednesdays for students who need or prefer to use this space to do their remote learning. All Covid protocols are still in effect. After the completion of synchronous classes and lunch, in the afternoon, the spaces are available for quiet study.

If your child will be on campus this coming Wednesday, it is crucial that we know in advance in order to have an accurate headcount. Please either complete this survey or communicate directly with Mindy. Students may also tell Mindy their plans themselves. If you know your plans all the way to spring break, please let us know!

Thanks for the Parent Gathering

Thank you so much to the parents’ group for inviting us to join you on Tuesday to share more about our academic program. We appreciated the great turnout, and we’re deeply grateful for the chance to engage in substantive conversation with you about where we’re headed.

Special thanks to Nick Cheadle and Zack Kordeleski for joining us to discuss our plans with language and math learning this spring.

We’d be glad to come back anytime. We also invite you to share your follow-up thoughts and questions with us at masteryschool@hawken.edu, and we’ll do our best to address them.

Good News about Lunch

Hawken’s food service staff do an incredible job keeping our community fed, healthy, and safe. (We’re looking at you, Adam and Kim!) Now that they’ve mastered producing food COVID style, SAGE has launched their COVID Core Standards-Phase 2 that add a bit more variety to the offerings.

In addition to the Phase 2 standards, SAGE also has a program called Seasonings, which will allow for more personal customization to the existing menu. A huge thanks to Laurel Muzic, Senior Food Service Director, and the entire SAGE team.

We Could Use a Hand (Or Ten of Them)

We are hosting our first ever MSH James A. Hawken Merit event for Semifinalists on Thursday, February 5th, at 5:00 p.m.  We would love to have a few founding families and Mastery School James A. Hawken Merit Recipients join us and share their experiences with prospective families.  Please send us an e-mail at MasteryAdmissions@hawken.edu for more details.

Our Mastery School Admission Committee met today to make preliminary decisions for our 2nd class of students.  We will be making big pushes between now and February 26th (when families let us know if they choose to enroll) to engage the wonderful families we plan to add to our community.  Be on the look out for ways you can help with our admission initiatives!

College News for Sophomores

Save the Date!

Families of Mastery School sophomores should join us on February 9, 7:00-8:00 pm to learn more about the college process. More details to come!

As a reminder, all sophomores will take the PSAT10 exam on Wednesday, March 3. More information to follow.

Congrats to the Class of 2021

The first college decisions have begun to roll in for Hawken seniors, and we couldn’t be prouder of or more excited for them.

Highlight of the Week

Each week, we find one glittering jewel to share among the pile of glittering jewels. This week’s highlight: In the Physics 9 Intensive, Structural Systems in Architecture, students explored physics concepts while creating design solutions for the Outdoor Education Center to be built on the Gates Mills campus by students during the spring intensive. The goal of the Outdoor Education Center is for it to be a community effort, and the Physics 9 students were some of the first to engage in the work!
