Thursday Note from The Mastery School of Hawken
January 21, 2021
We’re so grateful to be back in person! It’s a joy to see students on campus as they crunch their equations and record their sci-fi films.
Now that we’re face-to-face, it is crucial that we return to our protocols. That includes helping us stay informed. If your child will be absent from class or will be joining class remotely, please remember to complete the online absence form.
While emails from students or parents to Wayfinding mentors and the team are appreciated, we use this form each day to keep track of who is where, so thank you for taking the time to fill it out!

Finding Your Voice at the Mastery School
We all benefit from an environment that values who we are inside and that encourages us to believe in ourselves.
And we also know that girls — and those who identify as girls, gender non-binary, or gender non-conforming — benefit in particular ways from an intentionally designed high school.
Join us on Monday, January 25 at 6:30 pm to explore ways schools can help girls cultivate a more thorough sense of self, so they can purposefully use their voices to lean in, speak up, and stay true to themselves.
We believe mastery education is particularly well-suited for this critically important work, and we want to share some insights and to hear from you.
So, please join us and if you know another family who might be interested in this topic, please encourage them to attend!
Intensives wrap up next Tuesday, January 26 and then we prepare for the new semester during our faculty work days. There will be no classes Wednesday, January 27-Friday, January 29.
Monday, February 1: First day of the semester!
Monday, February 8: No classes — all-school faculty professional day
Monday, February 15: No School — Presidents’ Day
Wednesday, March 3: Sophomores take the PSAT
Saturday, March 13 – Sunday, March 28: Spring break

Highlight of the Week
Each week, we find one glittering jewel to share among the pile of glittering jewels. This week’s highlight: Ethan Khorana, Mastery School Class ’24, won first prize in Tri-C’s Stand for Racial Justice essay contest in the 9th/10th grade category. Read the piece here! A quick excerpt:“It is time that all stand up to the injustices the we see and that we ask more from one another. That is what we should do about racism.”
