Growth At The Center
When a school decides to organize everything it does around a student’s growth, a lot of exciting shifts begin to happen.
The Mastery School’s programs allow you to personalize your journey while also digging deep into ideas, skills, and knowledge.
All of it — every single piece of it — has your growth at the center.
The language we use to describe school will sound a little different because the kind of learning that they inspire will be a lot different.
Interdisciplinary experiences where you work in teams to solve real challenges for a community partner. Incoming students begin in one of our foundational Introduction to Complex Problem Solving Macros; then you opt into Macros in Environmental and Physics Systems, Humanities Applications, Political Systems, and more.
Micros & Studio
Self-paced, individualized, small group learning experiences focused on a specific skill or content area that give you some of what you want and some of what you need. They are short bursts of action with a clear focus. In Self-Directed Learning Micros, you are at the helm – not only initiating what you will learn but how you will learn it. Studio is self-guided work time to achieve the goals you’ve set forth.
Built-in opportunities to meet regularly with a mentor as well as a group of other students to process what you’re learning and to reflect on what it means to your particular journey. In Wayfinding, you’ll explore your identity, identify your strengths, and strengthen your sense of purpose.
Three-week immersive sessions that meet all day, every day. Twice each year, you’ll join your peers from the Upper School where you’ll dive deeply into topics together, such as Rocket Science or Shakespeare.
The Mastery School of Hawken is based on the notion that learning should be creative, enduring, deep, and transferable. And the truth is, that kind of learning doesn’t happen overnight, nor very effectively in the traditional 45 minute increments.
As we developed mastery learning, we imagined a school day that provided you with the time, space, and just the right amount of pressure that allowed you to dig deep and do your best work. That means you have the ability to explore concepts across bodies of knowledge and the space for your understanding to intersect. In our schedule, we’re working on your schedule.
