The Mastery School of Hawken is a new and different model for education and offers a unique set of opportunities.
Learning here is hands-on and tied to real-world challenges, and your growth is born from out-of-the-box thinking and the desire to continually improve.
Bring your entrepreneurial spirit, along with your aversion to pigeon holes and boxes, and let’s get to work.
The Application Process
Both Hawken high school campuses share the same admission standards. You can apply to either school, or to both at the same time.
Acceptance to Hawken is dependent on two factors: applicant qualifications and availability of space. Because spaces are limited and the applicant pool is competitive, it is to the candidate’s advantage to complete their application by the admission deadline listed below for entry in the fall of 2023. Applications completed outside this timeline are considered on a rolling admission basis and may be subject to limited space and/or limited Flexible Tuition.
Remember that the Mastery School and the Upper School are two parts of one high school. That means you belong on two campuses and with all of Hawken’s high school students. During Intensives, you’ll be in class together and after school you’ll be on the same teams, in the same plays, working for the same goals with each other.
If you’re applying to Hawken from another school, you can find details of our application process below.
Our application process is thoughtfully designed to help us get to know both your child and your family.
Step 1: Create an Online Account right here
You’ll be asked to:
Submit the application fee of $40
Upload a photo of your child (strongly recommended)
Submit the Parent/Guardian Questionnaire
Submit Student Questionnaire
Step 2: Schedule a Visit and Interview
This part of the application process lets you get to know us better, and will help you determine if we’ll be a good match. Students applying to both the Mastery School and the Upper School will need to schedule visit days at both campuses. Visits fill up quickly, so please call 440-423-8801 in advance to schedule.
Visit days at the Mastery School will be held in a group format on select dates. Students will experience a class, connect with students from our founding classes and faculty, and complete a 1:1 conversation with a member of the admission team.
Step 3: Delegate the Evaluation and Recommendation Forms
English and Math Evaluations: Ask your current English and Math teachers to submit a quick evaluation of your classwork. The process is simple: just enter their email address, and an evaluation form will automatically be sent to them. Teachers will complete and submit the evaluations online.
School Administrator or Guidance Counselor Evaluation: Pass the evaluation on to the appropriate Principal, Guidance Counselor, or school administrator. They’ll take care of completing and submitting the evaluation online.
Optional Personal Recommendation: You can ask a non-family member who knows you well (eg, a coach, clergy member, scout leader, music or art instructor, or an additional teacher) to write a recommendation for you. You can email this form to them in the same manner as the evaluation form, for them to submit online.
Step 4: Print and Submit the School Records Release Form to Current School
Please print and sign the School Records Release form and give it to your current school. They’ll submit the requested records directly to the Hawken School Admission Office. Hawken requires transcripts and/or report cards from the 2022-23 school year (through the most recent marking period) and the complete 2021-22 academic year.
Step 5: Testing
All students applying for grades 9-12 must submit ISEE scores. Applicants may register online for the test at iseetest.org. Please note that advanced registration is required. The ISEE is offered at Hawken’s Gates Mills (GM) and University Circle (UC) campuses for applicants to Grades 9-12 on the following dates:
