When you think of high school, you might think of rows of seats, loose papers scrawled with notes, and weeks of repetition punctuated by tests. That’s not what you’ll find at the Mastery School of Hawken.

Here, we know you’re capable of far more than school normally gives you credit for, which is why your achievements won’t be amounted to letter grades.

As a leader in redesigning school, Hawken knows that learning lasts when we learn while working on things that matter. Research confirms what we’ve known all along: that you’ll grow far more when you need to learn to do something real—like help community partners solve genuine challenges.

Your Signature is Your Mark
The M in our logo comes directly from the pen of our founder James Hawken. We discovered it on a “Character Card” he composed for one of Hawken’s first students in the 1920s.
It makes sense that the first M should belong to our founder and visionary.
After all, as new as the Mastery School is, it’s also a clear expression of Mr. Hawken’s vision of what school should feel like and what contributions it should make to its students and to the community.
It also feels right that The Mastery School of Hawken is some 700 yards from Hawken’s original 1915 home on Ansel Road near what we now call University Circle.
While the first M belongs to James Hawken, the next one belongs to you, our students.
